So I managed to kill the Guvnors NAS box and have now resurrected it. How to repair it (with a backup before hand) because we really don’t want to loose his data.

Step 1: We need to remove the hard drive from is enclosure:

(hey – we’re going fancy here and embedding video)

Anyway – I followed this for getting the thing to pieces.

Step 2: Using a SATA->USB adapter connect the box up to your linux PC (NB use on that works and is not flaky – it will save hours when trying to backup the data!)

Step 3: a quick dmesg on the command prompt will tell you which device it is:

[usb 1-4.2: New USB device found, idVendor=13fd, idProduct=1340

sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI disk

This shows the drive registered as /dev/sdb with 4 partitons, the data is stored on /dev/sdb4 however for some reason WD decided to use 16k block sizes which, unless you want to rebuild your kernel, most prebuilt kernels can use. Enter debugfs!

Step 4: We want to backup the data on /dev/sdb4 incase we totally cockup. As we can’t mount the partiton we can use a tool called debugfs, will allows us to do all sores of useful things, like recover deleted files etc. What we are using it for is just a way to read the file off the disk and make a copy of them elsewhere.

debugfs /dev/sdb4

Now we want to copy the contents of the share directory.

rdump share /backup/

To all intents and purposes this is the equivalent of cp -rvp /mnt/shares /backup/ if we were actually able to mount the drive. Beware this can take a loooong time and you will have no feedback whatsoever (unless it fails and you get lots of short reads due to using a dodgy SATA->USB adapter!)

Step 5: Okay! So we got the data backed up! Hurrah! Now we need to get the debrick script from here

or

wget http://205.196.122.104/brrbf21zprxg/g2xexkaaya34a9r/debrick.rar

unrar the script

unrar e debrick.rar

Step 6:And we need a copy of the firmware

wget http://download.wdc.com/nas/apnc-023205-046-20120910.deb

Step 7:Now we need to extract the rootfs.img from the firmware

unzip ap2nc-024202-012-20130401.zip
dpkg -c ap2nc-024202-012-20130401.deb

Which gives us a new folder called CacheVolume and in there is a folder called uploads and in there you will find rootfs.img
Step 8:Run the script:

bash debrick.sh /path_to/rootfs.img /dev/sdb

and answer the questions prompted:

********************** DISK **********************

Today has been a day of tinkering with media boxes and Live TV.

I have been using a raspberry pi and a g-box midnight as media boxes at home and running mythtv on an ubuntu box for a while now, however I have been having a lot of trouble with the cmyth client on both boxes. Firstly it is incredibly slow loading up the EPG (Electronic Program Guide) and switching channels, on top of that the audio sync gets worse the longer you watch something.

So how to fix these irritations?

Step one. Stop the myth mythtv server on the ubuntu box and install tvheadend instead.

Step two. Configure the tvheadend server, scan the steams and set up the channels etc. (hmmm need to edit the udev rules to give the right permissions the the satellite tuner!)

Step three. Check to see if the channels work locally.

Step four. Disable the cmyth client on both media boxes.

Step five. Enable the tvheadend client and configure it to connect to the ubuntu box.

Step six. Watch TV channels on the media boxes.

So far so good on the midnight box, however there are problems on the pi. All I get is a blackscreen when selecting a channel to watch.

Time to hit the interwebs….

After lots of searching we discover something for step seven…

Step seven. Enable timeshift on the tvheadend server.

Step eight. Retest on the pi, and voila a picture and sound, still one problem (well know about) the aspect ratio of the SD channels is out.

Step nine. Simple workaround – not the best I know – however change the video properties to zoom 16:9 and it looks fine. The downside is that this may affect movie playback.

Step ten. Similar sort of problem on the midnight box to sort out, same fix as above however the aspect ratio is fine – the picture just does not fill the screen.

So now I have much more snappy TV viewing with so far as I can see none of the AV sync issues I was having before. It’s still not perfect, but as the whole system on the midnight box is only in beta, and there are known problems on the pi I’m much happier!
